Approach Controller (C3)

The Approach Controller rating allows rated controllers to provide terminal control services. An Approach controller is expected to provide a variety of services to safely guide aircraft in, and out, of terminal airspace.

The Approach Controller rating builds on the foundations of all previous ratings, as you will be expected to provide top-down coverage when local aerodrome controllers are unavailable. Therefore, we recommend that you consolidate your knowledge from all previous ratings before continuing.

Consolidation of Knowledge

It is imperative that you have spent time consolidating knowledge from the Tower and Trainee Controller ratings before moving onto terminal control.

The Approach Controller rating is the first to introduce the requirement of a practical competency examination where candidates are placed onto the network with an instructor where their abilities will be assessed before being given the rating.

To achieve the Approach Controller rating you must:

  • Have completed a sufficient amount of self-study and be knowledgable in all operational aspects.
  • Have completed the theory examination with an acceptable result.
  • Pass a practical competency examination.
